This research aims to increase the amount of soybean meal that can be included in the diet of a carnivorous fish by using fermented soy in combination with a prebiotic to optimize nutrient utilization and retention. Fermented soybean meal with higher protein and fewer anti-nutritional factors has great potential in diets for commercially important carnivorous fish species such as largemouth bass. The addition of prebiotics to the diets could improve the benefits to bass synergistically. Demonstration of the efficacy of fermented soy alone or in combination with a prebiotic in supporting growth, feed efficiency, nutrient retention and health should result in the development of new markets for soy in higher-value carnivorous fish species.
