Phytophthora sojae is a variable pathogen with over 55 races reported. Resistance is conferred by a number of race specific RPS genes. In addition, race non-specific resistance may also be present. The numerous resistance genes for Phytophthora root and stem rot and the highly variable pathogen make screening for resistance to current races of the pathogen critical. In addition, selecting the correct procedure for cultivar evaluation is important to give accurate disease resistance evaluations for field performance, which may not be limited to race-specific genes.
