High soybean prices have caused many growers to seek out intensive management strategies to maximize soybean yield and profit. One of these strategies is the application of the herbicide lactofen (Cobra) to early vegetative soybeans. Yield increases observed from the application of lactofen were thought to be due to increased branching. However, yield component analysis conducted in 2012 found that lactofen does not cause increased branching when compared to untreated plants. This means that lactofen may increase yield due to other physiological mechanisms.
