Brief Project Summary:

Research conducted at Iowa research farms over the last five years has added to our knowledge and understanding of this new pest. The research team has confirmed that the presence of the aphid is not enough to warrant the application of an insecticide; and populations above 600 aphids per plant are typically needed to produce measurable yield lose. Based on several years of replicated field trials, they have developed a recommendation that incorporates an economic threshold of 250 aphids/plant (Ragsdale et al. 2007). Natural enemies, like ladybeetles common in Iowa soybean fields, can have a significant impact on aphid populations.
