Brief Project Summary:

Soybean farmers rely on improved soybean seed composition for continued profitability. The project goals are to characterize the genes that control soybean oil composition and yield. Researchers will generate new germplasm for breeding programs and develop new technologies for soybean genetics. Objectives include identifying and exploiting new sources of genetic variation conferring desirable oil composition traits with high throughput genomics tools; characterizing over 70 mutants that carry reduced levels of linolenic acid or elevated oleic acid, and soybean lines with other types of variation in the fatty acid profile; and using these lines to produce soybean oils with added stability and greater health benefits.
