Indiana ranks first in commercial duck production, third in egg layers, and eighth in turkey production in the nation. The industry's growth resulted in local surpluses of poultry litter, which is a mixture of bedding material, poultry excreta, and waste feed. It was estimated that more than one million tons of poultry litter was produced in 2008 in Indiana.
The benefits of the study to soybean growers is to develop comprehensive information on the relative value of poultry litter as an nutrient source for soybean production and to contribute the state's efforts to minimize its adverse environmental impacts of poultry manure.
