Brief Project Summary:

As the poultry industry continues to expand across Kentucky, so does the supply of poultry litter. Poultry litter provides Kentucky soybean producers with an economically viable alternative to commercial fertilizer. To continue the integrated approach to poultry litter use, this research utilizes previous and ongoing work conducted across the state to determine the economic value of poultry litter. A robust spreadsheet tool will be developed for soybean producers in Kentucky that is user friendly and have the ability to be customized for each individual producer. To underpin the tool, a meta-analysis will be conducted on previous research to determine the nutrient availability from poultry...

Project Deliverables

Predicted deliverables from this research include a robust meta-analysis to determine the nutrient availability of poultry litter from published research which will support a user friendly spreadsheet tool for Kentucky soybean producers to determine the economic value of poultry litter. Extension outreach to educate county agents and producers on how to use the tool is expected. It is also expected to host an invited farmer panel discussion to educate Kentucky producers on best management practices across the state as well as experiences from those applying poultry litter in the Chesapeake Bay region. Also, attending a professional regional extension conference to share the tool and discuss the findings is expected. All of the above aim to maximize the economic value of poultry litter, improve overall profitability, reduce economic risk, and gain awareness of best management practices across the state and in a region of where strict regulations exists for utilizing poultry litter.

Final Project Results

The United Soybean Research Retention policy will display final reports with the project once completed but working files will be purged after three years. And financial information after seven years. All pertinent information is in the final report or if you want more information, please contact the project lead at your state soybean organization or principal investigator listed on the project.
