Brief Project Summary:

This project objective is to produce and use a potent and environmentally friendly bio-based pesticide, rhamnolipids, to manage root rot in soybeans. Rhamnolipids have broad antimicrobial effects and can minimize the attachment of microorganisms onto surfaces. They also stimulate plants’ immunity against microbial infection. Research shows that rhamnolipids destroy P. sojae zoospores almost instantaneously at low concentrations. This project tests, modifies and optimizes the delivery formulations, and conducts greenhouse and field tests of developed formulations. Ultimately the goal is to produce the biopesticide from soybean oil and glycerol, and develop effective and economic formulations for its field uses.

Information And Results
Project Deliverables

Progress of the project will be measured by (1) production of necessary amount (~200 g) of rhamnolipids to support the other tasks, (2) development of the optimal fermentation process for rhamnolipid production, (3) development of effective biopesticide-containing seed coating formulationto protect against P. sojae infection during the most sensitive period of germination and initial growth, (4) development of pellet formulations for controlled biopesticide release to provide additional or extended protection during and beyond the initial growth phase, (5) production of sufficient amounts of the formulation(s) for small scale green-house tests, and (6) successful completion of the green-house soy growth tests.

Final Project Results

The United Soybean Research Retention policy will display final reports with the project once completed but working files will be purged after three years. And financial information after seven years. All pertinent information is in the final report or if you want more information, please contact the project lead at your state soybean organization or principal investigator listed on the project.
