Brief Project Summary:

A University of Missouri researcher is evaluating how longer crop rotations could be used for improved crop productivity and soil health. The project compares one-year up to five-year crop rotations for productivity, soil health and water quality. Plots include cover crop mixes, no cover crop, tilled and no-tilling. Soil sampling evaluates biological and chemical properties, and measuring soil water content. The cover crop mix used includes cereal rye, hairy vetch, Austrian winter peas and crimson clover. Plots using cover crops have seen yield boosts of 10 bushels per acre in soybeans, when using a three-year rotation with cover crops.
