Brief Project Summary:

In a traditional research proposal system, research is conducted and Extension materials are developed and disseminated at the end of the project. This creates a “gap” in farmer and industry awareness for emerging diseases/disorders, and prevents stakeholders from obtaining the most current information about emerging issues until research projects can be completed. Our North Central Disease Study Group bridges the gap between research and Extension for emerging diseases and provides farmers and industry with the most up-to-date information available each year. The goal of this group is to improve awareness of emerging soybean diseases in the North Central States by developing and distributing...

Project Deliverables

• Distributed over 20,000 copies of the soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV) publication to stakeholders across the North Central region, as well as Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Canada.
• Video footage related to SVNV was collected in Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin and edited into one NCSRP-specific video clip that was posted on the Soybean Research and Information Initiative website.
• Developed two full-length publications on stem canker, pod and stem blight, and two scouting cards on common soybean seed diseases and soybean stem diseases for distribution in 2015.
• Developed a uniform template for all group outputs that allows the reader to associate information with NCSRP and research-based information.
• Revised past NCSRP-funded publications, including publications on charcoal rot and white mold to fit the template and create a “uniform” Soybean Disease Management series through NCSRP that is posted on SRII.
• Discussions continue with NCSRP on how to improve availability of information and branding of outputs so stakeholders identify information with NCSRP.
• Research needs for SVNV, stem canker, and pod and stem blight were summarized by the group, resulting in 6 grant proposals submitted to USDA-NIFA or the United Soybean Board designed to further understand the biology and management of SVNV and the causal agent of stem canker.

Final Project Results

The United Soybean Research Retention policy will display final reports with the project once completed but working files will be purged after three years. And financial information after seven years. All pertinent information is in the final report or if you want more information, please contact the project lead at your state soybean organization or principal investigator listed on the project.
