Brief Project Summary:

Charcoal rot, caused by Macrophomina phaseolina, is a disease of growing importance in the North Central Region, yet current management options are limited. In addition, this disease is more severe when plants are stressed by heat and dry conditions. New fungicide programs and fungicide products are marketed to reduce plant stress, but these products and programs have not been evaluated to determine their impact on charcoal rot development and yield. Project Deliverables

• Conducted research to determine fungicide efficacy on M. phaseolina growth and final yield of soybean
• Determined foliar fungicides applied to reduce plant stress and manage charcoal rot would not provide a consistent economic benefit to farmers.
• Observed that one fungicide seed treatment reduced final colonization rates of M. phaseolina compared to the non-treated control, meaning it could have efficacy against this disease
• Determined that fungicides applied in-furrow may reduce fungal populations in some environments, but not others, and the result of in-furrow applications on final yield was inconsistent.
