With the increasing seed and seed treatment costs, there is great debate to whether such "yield insurance" is necessary. With an increase in screening of new active ingredients, it is imperative to understand the return-on-investment of using fungicide and nematicide seed treatments.

Past studies have focused on examining the effect of variety and/or seed treatment on early-season stands and final grain yield. Preliminary results indicate that seed treatment affected soybean stands and a second-generation neonicotinoid insecticide had higher early-season stands and higher yields. Additional studies are needed to confirm these conclusions.
