With increasing seed and seed treatment costs, there is a debate to whether such "yield insurance" is necessary. Given that many companies will mandate a seed treatment on their new traits or varieties, it is important to understand the return-on-investment of using fungicide and nematicide seed treatments.

Preliminary field study results indicated that the best benefit from the use of a seed treatment fungicide was in environments where conditions for early-season disease development were the greatest. The team is investigating how crop price and seeding rate impacts the management decision to use a seed treatment.
