Brief Project Summary:

The primary focus for the wide hybridization research is to transfer unique and economically useful traits from Glycine tomentella to soybean. Important traits have been identified in the wild, perennial Glycine species, but these species are not compatible by classical breeding methods. Wide hybridization uses a combination of classical genetic methods and in vitro technologies to overcome the incompatibility between plants of different species. This allows us to produce fertile hybrids and eventually soybean varieties with genes from the perennial species.
