The objective for this continuing project is to determine the effect of Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) and Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) infection on soybean seed production and quality, specifically, production of mottled seed and virus transmission through seed. The infection and its effect on soybean yield will be evaluated relative to the stage of plant development at the time of infection. These experiments were carried out in microplots with three plants per five-gallon pot and each virus (alone and as a mixed inoculum) inoculated onto leaves when plants achieved the first trifoliate stage, V2 (second node stage), V5 (fifth node stage) and R2 (full bloom) stages of development.
