Brief Project Summary:

The purpose of this project is to use genetic sequencing to compare resistant and susceptible soybean lines following inoculation with Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Sequences that are either significantly up- or down-regulated in the resistant soybean breeding lines compared to the susceptible variety are likely to contribute to resistance to this pathogen. Genes identified through this screen will shed light on a poorly understood resistance mechanism, and may reveal key proteins involved in resistance. More importantly, these key players can be either silenced or over expressed in a transgenic approach to develop superior Sclerotinia stem rot resistant lines.
