Brief Project Summary:

This project has a number of overall objectives. The first is to confirm results from earlier research that identified seed iron concentration as a consistent, reliable measure of resistance to Iron Deficiency Chlorosis (IDC). The second is to evaluate the potential of conventional plant breeding to increase seed iron concentration, as a means of improving resistance to iron deficiency. A third is to determine whether seed iron can be used as an indicator of successful (non-chlorotic) seedling establishment. This project will help determine if seed iron concentrations can be used as a molecular marker in breeding programs to reduce IDC.
