The goals of this project are to understand soybean Bean Pod Mottle Virus (BPMV) interaction and use this information to engineer resistance to BPMV. Previous studies have shown that endogenous levels of the plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) greatly influence the severity of BPMV infection in soybeans. Whereas increased endogenous SA provides resistance to other biotrophic pathogens such as Pseudomonas syringae and Phytophtora sojae, it significantly enhances susceptibility to BPMV.
