This research will initiate breeding for improved meal quality for animal nutrition in Indiana soybeans in the new Purdue Soybean Genetics & Breeding program. The first goal is to introduce genes in Indiana and the North Central region that change phosphorus (P) and carbohydrate (CH2O) content in seeds using conventional soybean breeding, which is a long-term investment. Output will be shared with breeders and other scientists, and ultimately Indiana soybean farmers in the form of cultivars. This research will contribute to the commercialization of soybean cultivars targeted to new markets like aquaculture, or cultivars with higher metabolizable energy for animal feed.
