Project Summary

This is a trade development and foodservice marketing program to promote U.S. poultry products in the Philippines targeting chefs, foodservice operators, culinary schools and students, and the top five retail chains in the country.

Project Objectives

1) Demonstrate to local chefs and culinary students the ways to utilize U.S. frozen poultry in the preparation of local or western type cuisines.

2) Dispel the myth that freshly slaughtered poultry is better tasting than frozen poultry.

3) Educate the foodservice sector on the correct storage, handling, cutting, and nutritional aspects of U.S. poultry.

4) Educate trade on the quality, safety, and inspection procedures of U.S. poultry.

Project Deliverables

- 10 retail stores carrying U.S. poultry products visited each month (monthly report on available cuts, pricing, competition, and retailer feedback)

- Conduct 3 retail cold chain and best practices seminars (20 attendees per seminar; >80% positive feedback through post event survey)

- Conduct 3 live recipe demonstrations (20 attendees per seminar; >80% positive feedback through post event survey, 1 new menu introduction)

- Reach >80% of students enrolled in chosen culinary (Live demo on U.S. poultry handling and menu innovation; Participate in a competition that feature U.S. poultry recipe innovation)

Benefit To Soybean Farmers

The proposed trade and food service marketing program will lead to a continued increase in demand for U.S. poultry, and, ultimately, to greater use of soybean meal and profit potential for U.S. soybean farmers.

Growth of U.S. poultry exports is particularly important as the poultry industry is the largest user of soybean meal among livestock groups, accounting for more than 55 percent of all the soybean meal produced in the U.S.

More exports of U.S. poultry and eggs mean more value-added exports of U.S. soybean meal. As poultry and egg exports increase, there is a greater need for more poultry and egg production, resulting in more soybean meal needed for feed. In 2019, Missouri soybean production was 130.5 million bushels of which, about 17.5 percent or 40.4 million bushels of soybean were used by the poultry and egg production sector in the state.

Without U.S. poultry and egg production U.S. soybean prices would decrease by 56 percent, all other things being equal. Without U.S. poultry and egg exports U.S. soybean prices would decrease by 8 percent, ceteris paribus.

If the U.S. can export just 1 percent more U.S. poultry and egg products due in part to these projects, then 1.5 million more soybean bushels will be used in the U.S. or 94,000 soybean bushels from Missouri.

The United Soybean Research Retention policy will display final reports with the project once completed but working files will be purged after three years. And financial information after seven years. All pertinent information is in the final report or if you want more information, please contact the project lead at your state soybean organization or principal investigator listed on the project.
