Brief Project Summary:

Taurine has been the subject of intensive and global research effort as a nutrient in aquaculture species, and it is now widely recognized as an essential nutrient for many teleost species of commercial importance in the United States and the rest of the word. These species notably include European seabass, gilthead seabream, cobia, white seabass, red drum, yellowtail, and Florida pompano (Salze and Davis, 2015).

The essentiality of taurine for teleosts was first discovered in larvae, when it was realized that the taurine level in natural prey such as copepods – promoting higher growth and survival rates – was markedly higher than that of enriched Artemia. Likewise, taurine was traditionally...

Information And Results
Project Deliverables

All experimental procedures and biochemical analyses are complete. Results have been evaluated with appropriate statistical methods. All variables, i.e. pellet size, extrusion temperature, water temperature, and time spent in water, were found to significantly affect the amount of leached taurine. In addition, significant interactions were also detected, namely between 1) time in water and water temperature, 2) time in water and pellet size, 3) pellet size and extrusion temperature, and 4) extrusion temperature and water temperature.

Manuscript preparation is in progress. An oral presentation has been given during the Soy Aquaculture Alliance (SAA) Annual Board Meeting on December 5th 2016. Another presentation will be given at the Aquaculture America 2017 held in San Antonio (2/19-2/22).

Final Project Results

The United Soybean Research Retention policy will display final reports with the project once completed but working files will be purged after three years. And financial information after seven years. All pertinent information is in the final report or if you want more information, please contact the project lead at your state soybean organization or principal investigator listed on the project.
