Brief Project Summary:

This research involves development of a conceptual model for using algae production. It emphasizes using nutrients from the Chesapeake Bay to cultivate macroalgae (seaweed) grown on submerged ropes and microalgae. The process involves pumping water onto shallow pools with screens, using the nutrients to grow the seaweed, and returning the clean water to the Bay. The activity recently was approved by the Environmental Protection Agency as a best management practice for Bay restoration. The produced algae would then be mixed with soybeans to produce fish food. This work intends to test and develop a good-quality, low-cost fish food by mixing soybean meal and algae.
