Soybean Cyst Nematode Race 5 (SCN Hg-type 2.5.7) is becoming a major yield challenging nematode in the Midwest, especially in the state of Illinois. The proposed research is about moving genes for resistance to SCN race 5 that were identified in PI438489B towards well adopted and high yielding lines for germplasm releases.
Although, PI88788 type of resistance is the most deployed one in the state of Illinois (~80%), it is breaking down. It has been found that new nematode populations can overcome PI88788 resistance. For this reason, there is an urgent need to diversify the genetic resources used to manage resistance to SCN in order to secure a suitable soybean yield.
