This project is an attempt to help solve a significant soil problem in Kentucky. Fragipan is a naturally occurring restrictive layer of silt loam soil that has been cemented together that occurs in about 2.7 million acres in Kentucky. This restrictive soil layer, occurring at about 20-24 inches in the soil profile, virtually stops water percolation and root growth. Therefore, fragipan reduces the water holding potential during the summer growing season and increases soil water saturation during the winter and spring. The overall goal of the project is to discover a cost-effective method that results in the remediation of the fragipan and improves crop production on the potential of those...
