The occurrence of the Dectes stem borer, Dectes texanus, is increasing in parts of Kansas. However, the reason for this expansion is not known but may be attributed to the availability of alternate hosts, winter survival and other environmental factors. The Dectes stem borer has been known to cause severe lodging problems to soybeans in Kansas, especially in the north-central and southwestern parts of the state. Infestations of 50 to 80 % plants with tunneling are common in some fields.
