One of the challenges with developing effective management practices for SDS is the limited understanding of the factors that affect timing and severity of symptoms. Roots can get infected during the seedling stage, but foliar symptoms typically only develop after flowering in field conditions. The reason for this lag between root infections and foliar symptoms is not known. Information about the biological processes that trigger SDS symptoms is needed to identify possible resistance traits for breeding and devise novel management approaches.
