1. For the 8 to 15 QTL previously identified across all populations, we will determine which are most essential to limit the colonization of P. sojae on seedlings. These will then be the focus of QTL introgression for breeders.
2. Key genes that contribute to the expression of partial resistance to P. sojae in soybean as well as molecular markers for those genes that can be used in breeding will be identified for each population.
3. The role of specific genes involved in the physiologic resistance pathways that contribute to the overall expression of partial resistance in soybean to Phytophthora sojae will be characterized. This will allow for more strategic and expedited development of cultivars with high(er) levels of partial resistance to P. sojae from Conrad as well as genes associated with novel QTL in PI 408105A (MO).
4. QTL that are associated with resistance to soybean seedling pathogens will be identified as well as potential markers for improving seedling disease resistance in soybean germplasm. This will allow for expedited delivery of QTL, markers and germplasm that not only expresses resistance to seedling pathogens, but other key traits as well.
