Iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) is a common yield-limiting factor for soybean produced in North Central Region. Yield losses have been estimated to cost regional producers at least $120 million annually. The scope of the problem has grown as soybean production has expanded throughout the high pH regions of western Minnesota and the Dakotas. Although iron is an abundant plant nutrient in soils, iron deficiencies are common in alkaline soils. The solubility (availability) of iron is reduced as the pH of the soil is increased. Fe(3+) ions are soluble at pH lower than 3 and Fe(2+) ions are soluble at pH 4-6 and iron solubility is decreased to a minimum in soils with a pH of 7.5-8.5. ...
